I used to have a clip light in my bedroom. I say used to because about 5 weeks ago the clip exploded with a surprising crack that reached into my dreams and jerked me out into a shocked panic. I jump up wondering Earthquake? Pipe Bomb? Eventually I worked out what had happened and managed to get back to sleep. [more…]
Since then reading in bed has been a huge drag since when I’m too tired to keep my eyes open, I have to get out of bed, stumble over to a light switch and turn off the lamp in my room.
Today I finally got around to buying a replacement light – except it’s one of those build it yourself Trading Spaces types of things where you have to attach the plug and the switch to the raw wires. The instructions for this suck, and I’m no electrician let me tell you.
Well, I’m working my way through it reading each instruction 5 times to make sure I really understand what they want me to do (especially since I realized early on that they’d totally screwed me and not told me about a semi-important step that it was impossible to back out of to fix). I get to the part where I take apart the switch like they say, being very careful not to lose the nut or screw.
I was being so careful not to lose the nut, that I promptly lost the nut. A stupid, little, nano-tech sized nut that is absolutely required to attach the switch and make the whole thing work. It dropped into my carpeting – bouncing under my bed, and no amount of searching can turn it up again. I’m pretty sure the monster that lives under my bed ate the stupid thing.
By the way, the area under my bed … yeah, not really the cleanest. I’m running my hand along the shag hoping to feel something like metal, hoping that the monster that lives under my bed won’t take a big bite out of my hand, hoping that the dust storm that kicks up from probably 4 years of inattention doesn’t totally choke me to death. That nut is gone. My new lights … absolutely, totally useless. Damn!
