I picked up the Mulholland Drive DVD over the weekend. I’ve never been a huge fan of Lynch. I loved Lost Highway, but most of his other stuff doesn’t really do it for me. I mean I can appreciate ambiguity. I actually like ambiguity a lot, but so much of Lynch’s stuff just seems to be ambiguous for ambiguity’s sake. It just feels self-indulgent to me (and yes, I appreciate the irony of complaining about self-indulgence on a blog).
Still, some people told me that if I liked Lost Highway, I would like Mulholland Drive, so I figured I’d give it a shot. True to form, I didn’t really care for it very much. However, coincidently, there’s a great discusion over on MetaFilter trying to sort through it all. Obviously you should be prepared for spoilers, and I know it’s not entirely coincidental what with the DVD just getting released and all. I may have to watch it again. It took me 5 tries to get what all the fuss was all about with Rushmore
