The most interesting thing from my perspective is the idea that his kids don&#8217;t use e-mail. They prefer Instant Messaging. <\/p>\n<p>I guess I&#8217;m old-school this way. I embrace e-mail almost to the point of compulsion (also covered in Ray&#8217;s article). I never went down the ICQ route though. I always saw it as some type of dividing line between Internet use and Internet abuse. I recognize that it&#8217;s an arbitrary distinction that exists only in my own head, but&#8230; With the introduction of AIM or Yahoo Messenger or Microsoft&#8217;s offerings, it&#8217;s less about the hard core uber geek fringe and more about a second line and a princess phone for the daughter up in her room. Or, I guess it would be a cell phones or pagers for the kids these days. <\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s amazing how many kids have cell phones &#8211; another technology I have completely rejected. I&#8217;m not a luddite. Really, I swear. I have just about every toy there is, but the instant communication toys don&#8217;t hold much appeal for me. While I generally tell myself its about not abusing the internet it&#8217;s really the way I want to use the internet that is at work. I use the technology as a filter or spacer between me and humanity.
