It is just uncomfortably warm around these parts today. I live within spitting distance of the ocean, so normally the weather remains remarkably temperate. Naturally that means my place doesn’t have air conditioning. I can’t even imagine what it must be like for the folks further inland or in the valley. They must be ready to burst into flame.

Anyway, I just got back from getting some ice cream. I discovered this local place, Cold Stone, which hand makes their own ice cream. It’s just unbelievably good. I got raspberry sorbet which had so much sugar it in that I’m ready to jump right out of my skin right now. [more…]

Combine that with the heat, and really want to go do something, but what? All the movies that are out right now suck. The beaches are sure to be just insanely crowded on such a hot, labor day weekend. Maybe I should go get some more ice cream.

Actually, I was thinking about buying one of those home ice cream makers. This is of course stupid for a number of reasons. First, I always buy these kitchen toys and use them exactly thrice before realizing that the effort it takes to clean them isn’t worth what you get out of them. Juicer – collecting dust. Micro-grill that instantly cooks hamburgers – garbage now. Rice cooker – haven’t touched it in a year.

Add to this the fact that I’ve made ice cream once before and I wasn’t really impressed by it. Back in high school there was this girl, Julie, that I dated for like 3 days. One of those days was spent with her parents making ice cream. I mean this was real courting parlor, come to call, here have some lemonade type of stuff.

All I remember was just cranking that stupid thing until I was sure my arm was going to fall off. Come to think of it, it probably wasn’t too different from the days I didn’t have a date. Anyway, after bags of ice and salt and awkward conversation, we finally got something that sort of resembled ice cream. I didn’t think it was as good as store-bought ice cream. I certainly didn’t think it was worth all the effort that went into making it.

But, I told myself, hot on the trail of a new gadget that I simply must have, they must make ice cream makers you don’t need to crank. In fact they do. I quick search on Amazon turns up several. But, what is the difference between one for $50 and one for $600? Anyway, the processor in my laptop is cranking up my body’s core temp. to the point where death is a likely possibility, so I think I’m going to be computerless for the rest of the afternoon. I’m crashing after all of that sugar anyway, so maybe I’ll nap through the worst of the heat.
